Local churches raise money for Philippines typhoon victims

Eyewitness News
FLUSHING (WABC) -- Nine days after Typhoon Haiyan swept through and devastated the Philippines, New Yorkers spent Sunday reaching out with relief efforts, fundraisers and prayers.

On Sunday, St. Michael's Church in Flushing took up a special collection for the Philippines.

Divina Pasion's relatives and friends survived the typhoon in the Philippines, but she still feels the pain for the many others who did not stand a chance against the powerful, devastating winds.

Many Catholic churches throughout the Tri-State area took up a second collection for disaster relief on Sunday for basics like water and medicine. From St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue to Asian communities in Flushing, the church was calling on the generosity of believers to help others who were suffering.
