Safety Upgrades Coming to Metro-North Derailment Site: MTA

WNBC
The MTA announced Sunday that safety improvements would be made at curves and bridges on Metro-North Railroad's routes, including at the site of last week's fatal derailment in the Bronx.

Signal crews have installed new protections at the Spuyten Duyvil curve, the site of the derailment, which will warn train engineers of the approaching speed reduction and will automatically apply the train's emergency brakes if speed is not lowered to the 30 miles per hour maximum in the curve, the MTA said in a statement.

The safety improvement will be in operation Monday.

In the accident last weekend, a train broke apart on the sharp Spuyten Duyvil curve, sending cars sliding toward the Harlem River. Four people were killed, dozens were injured and the train was later found to have been going 82 miles per hour.

I guess somebody gets killed and NOW they quickly put the device in that could have prevented the whole thing.

"The announcement of the improvements came after the federal government issued an emergency order Friday requiring Metro-North to install two crew members at the controls of trains in areas with significant speed restrictions."

What are the odds of that happening at that location again, anyway?
