De Blasio selects Farina for schools chancellor

Eyewitness News
NEW YORK (WABC) -- New York City Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio has selected Carmen Farina as the city's next schools chancellor.

The 70-year old Farina is a veteran of the system, having served as a teacher, principal and superintendent during her career in the Brooklyn school district, rising to deputy chancellor before retiring.

It has been reported that Farina initially was not interested in the position, saying she was content in retirement and spending time with her grandchildren, but changed her mind.

Among the challenges for the new schools chancellor will be launching universal pre-kindergarten, and upcoming negotiations with the teachers union, who will be demanding raises and back pay.

Not really sure, but hiring a 70 year old is nice after hearing all weekend that 50 year olds are having difficulty getting hired. Would be nice to see a trend of hiring older folks.
