New Marist Poll Shows Weiner Gaining On Quinn's Lead Among Dems

The latest Marist College poll released today shows former Rep. Anthony Weiner is within 5 percentage points of the frontrunner, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. Weiner has only been in the race for six days, but already he has 19 percent support among surveyed registered Democrats, compared to Quinn with 24 percent support. Trailing behind the two are Public Advocate Bill de Blasio with 12 percent, former City Comptroller Bill Thompson with 11 percent, City Comptroller John Liu with 8 percent and former City Councilman Sal Albanese with 1 percent. Another 23 percent of Democratic voters still undecided. The poll's margin of error is +/- 4.4 percentage points.

This is a big bump for Weiner from last month, when a Marist poll had him trailing Quinn by 11 percentage points. With more than three months to go until the Democratic primary, this race could shift even more.

There is some good news for Quinn, as the poll also asked about head-to-head match-ups in a potential Democratic runoff, and when choosing between the two, voters preferred Quinn to Weiner by 15 points, 48 percent to 33 percent.

This afternoon, Weiner will be debating his Democratic rivals onstage for the first time, minus Quinn, who backed out of today's debate. The debate, which is set for 4 p.m. at New York University's Kimmel Center at 60 Washington Square South, will focus on education.
