Mayor de Blasio Pals Call On Gov. Cuomo To Spell Out Extra Pre-K Spending In Budget Amendments

Ken Lovett

Supporters of Mayor de Blasio’s prekindergarten plan say it’s time for Gov. Cuomo to show just how much he’s willing to spend on his proposal.

In a letter to Cuomo, a half-dozen groups that back de Blasio’s tax-the-wealthy approach say the governor’s initial $1.5 billion funding proposal was inadequate and urge him to spell out how much more he’s willing to spend.

The groups, including the Campaign for Fiscal Equity, Citizen Action and the Alliance for Quality Education, said the governor should detail his plans in his 30-day budget amendments, which are expected to be released Thursday.

“Your 30 day amendment needs to make clear how the state can honor its commitment to all 4-year-olds and provide districts with the assurance they need that the state will provide ongoing resources for school districts to implement universal high-quality full-day pre-K as rapidly as they have the capacity to do so,” the letter stated.
