Fordham University mumps outbreak jumps campuses

Eyewitness News
NEW YORK (WABC) -- The outbreak of the mumps at Fordham University has spread from one campus to another.

There are now 13 reported cases, 12 at the Rose Hill campus in the Bronx and one at the Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan.

The symptoms are similar to the flu, but the virus can also cause painful swelling.

All of the infected patients had the mumps vaccine, but doctors say it's not 100 percent effective.

They didn't say anything about us old timers who had the vaccine half a century ago. How long is the shot we all had as a child going to protect us from mumps?

were asked to renew our vaccines several years ago. They said there was a batch back then that didn't take as well. I can remember not going to the campus doc to have it done (even though it was free to employees), but going to my own doc to get it done. At the time, people who received their original dose during 1965-1975 were asked to re-vaccinate.

I was born in '48.
My aunt and uncle had me vaccinated for everything. Some things twice because the first time was when I was a baby, the second just before starting school.

I guess since I fell into that "after 1957" date and we had some
cases on campus, was the reason they contacted people to have
the adult vax.
