Mayor Vows To Scrutinize Pre-K Programs Hit With Safety Violations

BY CORINNE LESTCH
City officials vowed to shutter pre-kindergarten programs run by community-based organizations that have been slapped with violations posing health hazards to children.

At a press conference Tuesday, Mayor de Blasio said he is “very serious” about addressing concerns after a Daily News investigation found that pre-K operators across the city have been repeatedly hit with safety and health violations.

“I think we have to do a better job of oversight that includes having resources for additional health inspectors,” he said at an event to promote his plan to offer universal pre-K to every city child.

The city performs 6,000 inspections of child care and pre-K programs each year – and half of those checks result in citations for dangerous conditions, said city Health Commissioner Mary Bassett.
