Schneiderman lists top consumer complaints
Rick Karlin, Capitol bureau
Consumer affairs is one of those areas that seems to get lost in the shuffle in favor of more glamorous topics. The states old Consumer Protection board was merged into the Secretary of States office a few years back, and weve heard little from them since.
The attorney generals office for more than a decade seems to have focused on a few high-profile consumer topics, such as Andrew Cuomos pursuit of shady college loan marketing or Eliot Spitzers pricing battle with school milk providers. Current AG Eric Schneiderman has put a lot of time into mortgage problems coming off of the 2008 financial collapse.
But consumers who have gotten bad home or auto repairs, or who have purchased defective items from sagging mattresses to balky computers lack an organized presence in the political arena, and they often suffer in silence.
