Progressive group: Rep. Dan Maffei should face a Democratic primary challenge

Republicans in the 24th Congressional District have designated a candidate to challenge U.S. Rep. Dan Maffei, but one liberal group hopes the incumbent Democrat will face a primary challenge in June.
Primary Colors, a group that uses a formula to determine "good Democrats" and compiles a list of Democrats that should face primary challenges, ranked Maffei, D-Syracuse, as one of six Democrats who should be primaried.
According to Primary Colors' website, the scores awarded to Democrats is based on an algorithm comparing "a (representative's) ideology to (their) district's partisan lean." Using the formula, a list is compiled that "prioritizes a list of primary challenges to excessively conservative members in relatively safe Democratic districts."
Each Democrat is given a primary score between one and 10. Maffei's primary score is 7, according to the website.
