WFP backs a challenger to John Sampson

The Working Families Party is endorsing Dell Smitherman, one of the Democrats challenging State Senator John Sampson, the former Democratic conference leader who is fending off federal embezzlement charges.

The endorsement puts pressure on the Democratic establishment, forcing a choice between their embattled former leader and the WFP, a labor-backed party whose influence at the city level was reinforced by its strong performance in the 2013 elections.
