Owasco Lake advocates decry runoff of manure into water

Owasco Lake's water is challenged by its users.
The natural resource provides drinking water for 44,000 Cayuga County residents. These people, plus visitors to the area, depending on the season, will also frolic in the lake and on it.
If they can.
When the unwelcomed entry into the lake of dairy cow manure occurs, as happened on Feb. 21, neighbors, guests and water drinkers alike find the lake and their goals fouled.
According to a March 19 letter to the state Department of Environmental Conservation signed by six members of the inter-municipal entity Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council, a large liquid manure runoff event occurred on that February Friday. And local officials and lake advocates have been frustrated by the state agency's response.
