Saratoga developers concede fight to expand hometown casino

By Matthew McKibben

After months of speculation that Saratoga Springs would host a Las Vegas-style casino, the Saratoga Casino and Raceway formally abandoned their plans to expand on their current operation and bring a destination resort to the Spa City.

In a release issued Tuesday, the Saratoga Casino and Raceway stated they will move forward with plans for a Rensselaer County casino instead.

In March the Saratoga Springs City Council adopted a resolution opposing expanded gaming in the city. Weeks later when the application guidelines were released, a measure included in the guidelines — which said local legislative support for live table gaming would be heavily weighed — essentially eliminated Saratoga from consideration to host one of the four coming casinos in upstate New York.
