City wins $800K federal grant for Vision Zero efforts

Ryan Hutchins

New York City will receive about $800,000 in federal transportation funding to invest in Mayor Bill de Blasio's Vision Zero initiative, officials said this morning.

The multi-year grant will be split between NYPD enforcement efforts and Department of Transportation education programs meant to reduce the number of pedestrian traffic fatalities, D.O.T. chief Polly Trottenberg said. New York is receiving the bulk of a $1.6 million award from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

“We're hoping this money is going to enable us here in New York to come up with even more creative and effective ways to target the public and reduce traffic fatalities,” Trottenberg at a press conference in Times Square pedestrian plaza.
