State mandates some changes to health plans on Obamacare site

Claire Hughes

Albany

Insurance companies offering health plans next year through New York's online market must protect consumers from surprise bills from out-of-network providers, but will not be required to offer plans that include regular out-of-network coverage.

Those details come from a state invitation to insurance carriers to offer health plans on NY State of Health in 2015, released by the state Health Department on Friday.

NY State of Health is an online market, or health exchange, where individuals and employees of small businesses can shop for insurance. It was established in October to meet the requirements of the federal Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare. The law requires most Americans to have health insurance.
