(15,189 posts)I wish someone would help Dan Rather with his rattling dentures. Doesn't he have enough money to fix that? I would go ape shit crazy listening to him clack away. It's all I could hear for a while. LOL!

(28,789 posts)not just the delivery and the dentures, the content. he just does not seem like such a font of wisdom to me. i watch rachel in the morning on my computer so it's easy not to watch him.

(19,841 posts)--gotta support the effort to shine a spotlight on these diabolical machinations re. NC voting.
Rachel called this a national issue. And unfortunately NC encompasses all the conceivable ways vote suppression can be done. Other states are not quite so aggressive in their efforts to stop people from voting.
Can't get over how whole committees will go along with these corrupt practices and see nothing wrong with it. None of the NC Republicons seems to have any ethics.

(11,441 posts)The headline about Wells Fargo laying off over 2,000 was like a kick in the gut, but Powell bashing NC voter suppression helped me recover.

(19,841 posts)During his speech, Powell pushed back on the idea, which McCrory has cited, that voter ID laws curb voter fraud.
"You can say what you like, but there is no voter fraud," Powell said. "How can it be widespread and undetected?"
He continued, "What it really says to the minority voters is ... 'We really are sort-of punishing you.'"

(16,245 posts)It was pretty good. I have some very blurry pictures.
It was good show. I had no idea the extent of the voter suppression that has already happened. It's been happening here to students at ECSU for years. Most of the challenges are by this one ugly right-wing nutcase.
Of course the white, Christian college in town gets very few voters challenged.
WorseBeforeBetter
(11,441 posts)I thought I had been keeping up fairly well, but wasn't aware of the Christian college, Sue Myrick's involvement, or like you said, the ECSU students already challenged.
The voter suppression is bad enough, but it's amazing how willing Republicans are to put students in danger, like those that would need to walk on that busy road to the Boone precinct. And App State is the biggest employer in Watauga, it's astonishing they're being treated that way -- students, employees, everyone.

NC Republican voter suppression
Elizabeth City (Pasquotank County) --comparing two universities there--Mid Atlantic Christian, (mostly white) where they have never had a problem with students not being able to vote. Elizabeth City State University (historically black) = all sorts of voting challenges. Pete Gilbert is the chair of the local Republican party. Mr Gilbert is supported by Sue Myrick (of "Civitas," & she is also an ex-Charlotte mayor), who came to his district to observe the challenge of Montravias King, the ECSU student who is trying to run for city council. This guy Gilbert plans to challenge student voting eligibility across the state. Setting a dangerous precedent for other states--this is why it's a national story. The state elections board has not set a date for the hearing on this matter.
Boone (Wautauga County) NC-- Appalachian State University --went for Obama. Elections board is closing polling places for early voting. The College Democrats president shows how difficult it is to even get to the one polling place supposed to handle 9000 voters for 35 parking spaces and inadequate bus access.
DOJ will investigate Texas voter ID. Why not NC? Interview with Rep GK Butterfield. Butterfield wants DOJ involved in NC case. Can successfully show voting suppression in NC. This is a national plan to disenfranchise voters.
"Elizabeth City is a place of immense strategic importance."
Thank you Rachel & MSNBC!
