A federal judge in Greensboro lifted a stay late Wednesday afternoon that blocked proceedings in the challenge of North Carolina's ban on gay marriages, and asked attorneys for the challengers to submit a motion striking it down.

"We're very hopeful a ruling will come down any minute now," said Aaron Sarver, spokesman for the Asheville-based Campaign for Southern Equality. "This is really the last procedural roadblock. Everyone is waiting very anxiously."

Amendment One, North Carolina's ban on same-sex marriage, was still in effect Wednesday, though lifting the stay indicates a ruling will come down soon.

Cathy McGaughey and Diane Ansley, partners of almost 15 years, awaited a ruling Thursday morning in the basement of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, next to the Register of Deeds' offices....

State employees can now add their same-sex spouse to their benefits. I saw that today when I was making some changed to my enrollment.

Also, I think the state has ordered clerks to register same-sex marriages. If they refuse, they run the risk of losing their jobs.

So I don't think they are fighting this now.
