We have 2-foot-tall squirrels? NC biologists posted a photo of one

North Carolinian ... state wildlife officials posted images this month of a 2-foot-tall squirrel.

The photos were captured by camera traps in Robeson County, and reaction on Facebook can be summed up by commenter Ruth Bergstein of Greensboro: “He’s huge!”

State officials identified the animal as a fox squirrel that was likely 26 inches tall (not counting its tail) and weighed nearly 3 pounds.

That’s about a foot taller than a beagle, according to the American Kennel Club, and twice the size of the more common gray squirrels seen in metropolitan areas like Charlotte and Raleigh, says the North Carolina Wildlife Commission.

Wonder if he's met the giant steer in Australia? Is the advent of giant animals a sign of the Apocalypse? Anything in Revelations about the Revenge of the Eaten?

Come to think of it, didn't an Air Force plane on a training run lose a nuke in the Carolinas once upon a time?

The squirrel in the article/photo is a “fox squirrel”.
So I googled and found this:

"The fox squirrel, also known as the eastern fox squirrel or Bryant's fox squirrel, is the largest species of tree squirrel native to North America.
The (adult) squirrel's total body length measures 17.7 to 27.6 in, tail length is 7.9 to 13.0 in ..."
