Republican state Treasurer Josh Mandel and U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci of Wadsworth have been subpoenaed by the defense to testify in the federal case against a North Canton businessman accused of illegally funneling about $200,000 to their 2012 campaigns, according to sources with knowledge of the case.

Sources told The Dispatch that not only were Mandel and Renacci subpoenaed to testify, but that lawyers for the politicians would soon file petitions to have those subpoenas quashed.

Aides to Mandel confirm the existence of a subpoena from the attorneys of Benjamin Suarez, the man who will stand trial in Cleveland starting on Monday for allegedly conspiring to illegally pump cash to the two Republicans’ campaigns and to cover up the crime. But Mandel’s aides said the subpoena was for documents and “neither the defense nor the prosecution has notified (Mandel) that they will call him to testify.”

A spokeswoman for Mandel also made it sound as if calling him to testify would be a mistake for Suarez.... MORE
