'The' Ohio State University wants to trademark THE

The school has insisted for years that you call it "THE Ohio State University." Now it has filed for a trademark on the word.

Ohio State University athletes and coaches who insist that you call it "THE Ohio State University" could soon have the federal government on their side after the university filed a request to trademark the word "the" last week.

Application No. 88571984, filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Thursday, was discovered and publicized Tuesday by Josh Gerben, a prominent trademark lawyer in Washington. The application seeks a trademark on the single word "THE" for use on T-shirts and baseball caps and hats.

For years, the university's demand that it be called "THE Ohio State University" has rankled sports fans and journalists, who've called it "pompous and stupid," "ridiculous" and "arrogant."

Partisans, including the university, point out that "the" is part of its name under state law. And Chris Deavey, a spokesman for the university, told The Columbus Dispatch on Tuesday that it's important to "vigorously protect the university's brand and trademarks."

The Ohio State University is one of the very few big time athletic programs that
makes money and is self supporting. The vast majority of other universities lose money
on the athletic programs.

The only way "The Ohio State University" could get this approved would be if they could argue that the "The" keeps them from getting mistaken for another university.

For example, consider "Coca-Cola". The Coca-Cola company has trademarked these words written in that font. Yes, Ford uses the same font, BUT they use it for selling cars, not soft-drinks.

The definite article: Ohio State seeks trademark on 'The' for university merchandise https://t.co/vI5WfqivyB

From the article
Snip-"The university had Urban Meyer’s name trademarked in 2015. Ohio State also secured a trademark designation for Woody Hayes in 2016.

In obtaining the trademark for Hayes, the university stipulated that royalties from sales would be designated for a scholarship fund.

There have been disputes over trademarks in the past. In February 2017, Ohio State requested to trademark the acronym OSU on clothing and apparel.

Oklahoma State University, which also goes by the acronym OSU, objected. Eventually, the two schools signed an agreement that allowed both schools to use the acronym on a national basis."

These little colleges have to much money to waste doing this CRAP. This school does not seem to be a BRAIN trust. This is just another FAKE education institute which is trying to rob the public.
