Philadelphia City Council plans soda tax hearings
The controversy bubbling up around the city’s sugary beverage tax and its finances will continue to crackle and pop in the new year as City Council plans to put the levy under the microscope before the May primary.
At-large Councilman Allan Domb has called for hearings on the 1.5-per-ounce tax on sweetened beverages.
“I want to make sure the revenue that we’re collecting is accurate, number one, and, number two, we’ll be investing it accurately,” Domb said. “I have not heard how all the money is being allocated.”
City Council approved a resolution for the public hearing, which Domb sponsored, during its final session of the year. Domb was uncertain what committee would hold the hearing to analyze potential solutions to stabilize revenues from the tax. Any hearing would be held after City Council’s next scheduled session on Jan. 24.
