Site near Phila. to be used to transport PA. natural gas products onto ships for overseas markets

http://www.philly.com/philly/business/homepage/20130510_Owners_have_big_plans_for_Marcus_Hook_refinery.html

Because natural gas prices have fallen, the industry is looking for ways to export it from PA to other countries A multi-billion facility is being built along the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland to transport liquefied natural gas from PA. to India, China and other countries by ship. The latest plan is now to used the closed refinery at Marcus Hook along the Delaware River southwest of Phila. to transport liquified products made from natural gas.

Excerpt:

"The Marcus Hook refinery, which has five deepwater berths, will become the anchor for Sunoco Logistics' Mariner East project, which will transport natural-gas liquids like propane and butane through an existing pipeline from Western Pennsylvania for loading onto oceangoing vessels in Marcus Hook.

The former refinery site already has substantial storage tanks, but the company plans to build some large refrigerated aboveground tanks for storing ethane, which must be supercooled to remain liquid. Most of the materials being shipped through Marcus Hook are destined for export as ingredients in chemical manufacturing.

The Mariner East project is scheduled to go on line in late 2014, but Sunoco Logistics is already bringing propane by truck and rail to Marcus Hook, Hennigan said"

The article says there are competing projects to transport natural gas products from Pennsylvania to the Gulf Coast for overseas shipping.

So much for American energy independence.

We buy and we sell but most of this is coming from Canada, we sell some and we use some. We also produce some.

is an idiot....and there are a lot of them. You can recognize them when they say "energy independence". And why do they want the Keystone pipeline??? Wake up.

And here in PA, they keep pushing for conversion to natural gas on buses, and plants, and cars.....because the price is low. Just wait until they are all converted.

"The company has budgeted $600 million to complete the Marcus Hook connection as well as a second project, Mariner West, which is converting an existing pipeline to transport natural-gas liquids from Western Pennsylvania to Ontario."

Off to Google I go.....

On edit: Here is a map of planned and existing pipelines.

>snip<

Project Mariner West is a pipeline project to deliver ethane from the liquid-rich Marcellus Shale processing and fractionation areas in Western Pennsylvania to the Sarnia, Ontario petrochemical market. The project is anticipated to have an initial capacity to transport up to 50,000 barrels per day of ethane and can be scaled to support higher volumes as needed. Mariner West is scheduled to be operational by July 2013 to meet the expectations of the ethane producers and consumers.

There's a gas pipeline going in just a mile or so away from us, but I don't see it on this map; where we're living right now is further north and east of the red dots on the map. Maybe there are others?

I didn't read the whole thing. Who knows?! They do whatever they want in Corbutt's Pennsylvania.

Neither of us grew up here so we won't miss it - especially now that Corbett and his cabal have ruined a beautiful state. I'm hoping our kids will choose to leave, too. They're the only family we have here.

This might sound harsh, but most of our neighbors vote for Repugs, so I really don't think I could work up a lot of sympathy if bad things happen to them because of the gas drilling. At this point I'm much angrier at what is happening to the wildlife and forests.

The frackers have invaded our county like locusts. All of our neighbors signed with them. We are the only holdouts and are waiting to see what the ramifications of that decision will be.

We are life-long Pennsylvanians with most of our family here. I'm too entrenched to move at this point. Where will you go?
Sorry to lose a fellow democrat!

We've been talking about moving there for at least two decades - even before we moved to PA. We do have family there, more than we have in Pennsylvania. In addition, we are cold climate people; even here in northeast PA it gets too warm for us. That said, there are a lot of really, really nice people we'll miss. If not for the fracking, we might have stayed.

Actually, there is no gas drilling in our county yet, but we are getting the gas pipeline and, if reports of our wussy DEP approving fracking fluids for road de-icing in winter are true, we've probably got that too. As you know, nearly everyone in PA relies on private wells and that is our biggest concern. (There's also the neighborhood idiot that hires the chemical lawn firm several times a year; we're probably drinking his garbage, too.)
Nevertheless, we sit atop the Marcellus and our county officials assure us that it's not a matter of 'if', but 'when' gas drilling arrives.

It might actually be in Salem Township, but I'm not sure about that.

It's all very convenient that the frackers have all of those wells right next to Beaver Run Reservoir, which is a stone's throw from the Sunoco Logistics Plant.
