Corbett STILL trying to sell the PA. Lottery, despite the current lottery making record profits

http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2013/05/lottery_privatization_pursuit.html#incart_river

There are plenty of parts of PA. state government that may be broken, and deserve fixin'. However, the PA. Lottery is not one of them.

Attyn. Gen. Kane is still saying that she will not sign off on any privatization unless it is approved by the PA. Legislature. Corbett doesn't want to do that, and instead thinks he can just tinker with the contract and change a few words to get it through.

The agreement would last 20 to 30 years. Some PA. Democrats have proposed a state law saying that a Governor could not be enter into any contract that does not have Legislative approval if the contract lasts more than 4 years.

Excerpts from Harrisburg Patriot-News article:

"Despite a trajectory that shows Pennsylvania Lottery profits on course to break the past year’s record-breaking performance, Gov. Tom Corbett’s administration has not abandoned its effort to privatize the lottery’s management.

Administration officials have been working with consultants and lawyers to revise the contract that Attorney General Kathleen Kane rejected in February, because she determined it was unconstitutional.

....Meanwhile, the tab to taxpayers for this privatization pursuit continues to grow. The tally so far stands around $3 million. ...With $3 million, seniors could buy 144,927 prescriptions through the PACE and PACENET programs. Or that amount would cover the bill for 50 seniors receiving nursing home care for a year, according to information in the governor’s budget.

Who does Corbett owe that he's so hell-bent on privatizing the PA Lottery?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

with the Attorney General is keno. She's made it plainly clear that any effort to include keno in the lottery violates the state's gaming laws, which is true.

Keno is the only way that the Camelot contract comes anywhere close to meeting any proposed profit amounts.

it's so black-and-white but I honestly believe in many cases Corbett prioritizes his anti-government ideology over policy outcomes. The liquor privatization is a great example, another major one is the Medicaid expansion. He wants to use the same funds for private insurance plans which are more expensive so fewer people will be covered. But as long as it's not the government doing anything to help people, Corbett is cool with it.

I have no idea how I got on the Governor's Office email list, but I get regular public relations emails from him. Fortunately, my email system (on its own) has decided that those emails belong in the junk mail folder.

Corbett is running out of friends in PA, even among Republicans. However, at least the Koch Brothers are still showing him love. They just sent him a political contribution through Koch Industries PAC.
