Corbett spending millions on law firms to stop gay marriage, sell PA. Lottery, require voter ID

http://readingeagle.com/article.aspx?id=518362

1. His effort to turn the PA. Lottery over to a British Company for 30 years:

"the governor has spent $2.36 million on legal consultant DLA Piper, and just recently authorized nearly an additional $1 million to be paid to the firm.... the administration has also paid Blank Rome $116,000 to assist with lottery privatization efforts, and authorized spending up to $200,000 on the firm through the end of the year."

2. To require that all voters must show certain types of government photo IDs:

"Philadelphia's Drinker Biddle, which has been paid just shy of $1 million since last year."

3. To try to use Federal anti-trust law to overturn the agreement Penn State made with the NCAA, which Corbett had previously approved as a Penn State Board member, and which the federal judge called "a Hail Mary pass":

"the administration had paid Cozen O'Connor $382,852.37 for assistance on the suit, and the contract with the firm authorizes spending up to $650,000 through this year, with attorney pay ranging from $355 to $585 per hour. Administration officials could not say whether there are still invoices pending."

4. To defend against a challenge that the State has not been providing sufficient funding for the Chester-Upland School District, one of the poorest districts in the state, and where thousands of public school students have been diverted to for-profit charter schools operated by Corbett's largest campaign contributor:

"The law firm, whose former chairman, Steve Aichele, was Corbett's general counsel and later chief of staff that year, has received $1.39 million in fees for its work on those suits, according to the administration."

5. To defend the State's requirement that all marriages must be between a man and a woman:

The court battles are just starting, and legal bills will soon be coming due.
