Yesterday was the last print edition of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. It's now an online newspaper only for Pittsburgh although Trib Total Media will continue to publish printed editions of the Greensburg Tribune and Valley News Dispatch plus a few other small papers.
They've been downsizing and contracting since their owner Richard Mellon Scaife died in 2014 and the trust he was using to prop up the paper was emptied. One less right wing rag.

(15,286 posts)Scaife was determined to drive the Post-Gazette out of business. AFAIK, the Trib never made money and was subsidized by Scaife every year to the tune of millions. When he died, his mother's (Sarah Mellon Scaife) trust (known as the 1935 Trust) which was set up for his well-being was completely spent. Scaife has a son and daughter who were mad that there was nothing left for them. (Don't feel bad for them, they have their own lucrative trust fund.) They sued for an accounting and then it all came out about how the trustees, one (Gutnick) of whom was president of the paper, used up all the money when Scaife was very ill at the end and really didn't know what was going on. Gutnick also allegedly put a pen in Scaife's hand and had him "sign" a revised will. The kids are contesting that, too.
It's really hilarious to read the whole sorry saga.
