Bethlehem's SunGard K-12 sold in $850M deal

BETHLEHEM — SunGard K-12, a low-profile data-systems company with a big market in education, has been acquired for the second time in two years.

A private-equity backer of PowerSchool Group, a California educational company, purchased the Bethlehem-based provider of school administrative software as part of an $850 million deal, the companies announced Thursday.

The transaction will not affect local operations or employment, said PowerSchool CEO Hardeep Gulati. In fact, SunGard, with 200 employees at its 1 Bethlehem Plaza offices on West Broad Street, plans to add 40 to 50 workers in technical, support and sales in the near future, he said. He declined to provide salary ranges.

"We still have to assess how much facility and room we have for growth," said Gulati, adding PowerSchool will make SunGard's Bethlehem offices a hub for its East Coast business.
