Walmart's 'Worst Nightmare' Competition Has Cashiers And Produce Clerks With $1 Million Pensions

WinCo -- a low-cost grocery store chain from Idaho -- is being described as Walmart's 'worst nightmare' in a recent Time Article:

WinCo destroys the Walmart-inspired myth -- well, Trader Joe's and Costco do this as well -- that low prices necessarily mean low labor standards.

And, guess what, WinCo is coming to the state so big it's like a whole other country: Texas.

While WinCo does keep its business quiet, we do know one thing: The company is in the process of expanding to new states, with two locations opening in north Texas next year, for example. Flickinger anticipates rapid growth in the near future, with WinCo doubling in size every five to seven years going forward.

Be afraid, Walmart, be afraid. Karma, you know, is, well...

I do hope they succeed big time and drive Walmart to the ground. Basic food staples without big box disposable crap! And even better jobs for employees!

2. Winco is great!!

I have to go to Idaho to shop at one but it's prices are affordable and their produce and bulk item selections are vast. Last I checked, Winco was an employee owned company... all the more reason to shop there. Wish they'd come to Montana too. Since I go to Idaho for a variety of reasons on occasion, I always bring a cooler and enough funds to go on a food shopping spree there.

Sounds like the way they undercut Walmart is to source the produce/meats etc from local farmers. So it helps the local farming economy as well.

Not sure if they sell any clothing or household items like Walmart. Maybe only things needed in a kitchen.

I'm just hearing about this company myself.

items they would have that the "other" would have is paper products, kitchen ware and sundries (shampoos, soaps. Pretty much a grocery store. I've never seen furniture or clothing at any of the Winco stores I've ever been in (that would be several around Idaho).

Good news for folks in Texas, most of their prices are more affordable and of better quality than you would normally find in the "other" joint. You "bag yer own" stuff but how hard is that? You managed to get the stuff in the cart, right?

Edit to say, they pay a living wage and have profit sharing among other perks.

5. Taxpayer' support the Walmart Employees

When you go to Walmart and marvel at the low prices, just remember that the taxpayers subsidize Walmart because the pay is so low that the employees are eligible for food stamps, Medicaid and other Federal low income programs.

And the workers are caught in that low wages, bad job trap. And forget about pensions and retirement savings at Walmart. This company is employee owned so the employees are sure going to treat themselves fairly.
