Planning on attending the A&M-Alabama game? Ordinance lays out rules renting out homes on game days

Hotel rooms have long since filled up for the impending Texas A&M football season, but unless you're operating a registered bed and breakfast, renting out your house or even a bedroom to traveling Aggies or fans of the visiting team is a violation of College Station ordinances.

The homes that are rented out are considered bed and breakfasts in College Station, which are allowed in residential areas under a city ordinance but must be registered with the state as a business and must pay hotel/motel taxes. It must be the permanent residence of the owner, must be maintained with a residential appearance and is limited to four unrelated occupants. The property owner must remain on-site to operate the home the entire time it's being rented.

"Business activity brings with it a large number of people, brings additional traffic that can make emergency access more difficult, and, depending on how the business is operated, it can bring with it noise if there are parties," {Bob} Cowell said.

He also said using residential homes for commercial purposes might affect the owners' liability insurance if something went wrong.
