Aggie Band, Reveille snubbed by Arkansas Razorbacks

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas A&M will play the University of Arkansas this Saturday in Fayetteville, but two symbols of Aggie tradition will be missing.

According to a report by KBTX.com, Arkansas says the Aggie Band and Reveille won't be allowed on the field, but it's nothing personal.

"Apparently in the SEC, you have to ask that university permission to perform at halftime. So we sent a letter asking. They sent one back that said you can come to the game, but you can't perform at halftime," said Karly Hartman, a senior in the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band.

Arkansas athletic officials said their home game schedule is to blame.

3. The same thing happened to the West Virginia University band this year.

The University of Maryland insisted that no visiting band is ever allowed to perform at their home games. However, the WVU band performed there when I was in the band in the 1970s, and has performed there as recently as 2005. To add insult to injury, the game was not held at Maryland's home field, but at the Baltimore Ravens stadium, ostensibly a neutral site.

In both cases, I smell a band that can't stand a little competition.

If they can fund a trip, they are usually allowed to perform unless there's a special event at halftime (awards, etc).

One half of the time is allotted to the visiting team's band, the other half to the home team's. It's even in the UIL rules, & there are allowances for extra time at Homecoming.

How many are they marching this year? Almost 400? Incredible sound. I like watching them step off from the quad on game day.

Reveille is the prettiest mascot. Their loss.

The Aggies are going to tear Arkansas a new one, anyway, with or without the band. Too bad those hotel rooms are being cancelled. I bet Arkansas can't fill the stadium this year.
