Texas isn't deep in the hearts of many Americans

WASHINGTON — Texas is big, proud and not really liked much by people in other states.

According to a recent Public Policy Polling survey, Texas ranked as the 37th most-popular state.

Overall, 40 percent of Americans have a favorable view of the Lone Star State.

That placed Texas behind favorite state Hawaii. And North Dakota. And Rhode Island.

6. Texans brag too much about how great Texas is.

I've lived in Texas for 45 years, and that has always been the case. That pisses off people from other states who think their state is the greatest. I love living here but still, sometimes it gets to be too much.

8. As a lifetime, born & bred Texan, I know that Texas has always bragged about being the.....

.....biggest and best. It really "chapped our hide", when Alaska became a state, and claimed the "biggest" label from us. I fully realize how inadequate Texas is on so many levels, but it does have a fascinating history, and a valid claim to widely diverging geographic and cultural richness, from the East Texas, tall pine country, to the wide open "big sky" of West Texas, to the beautiful central Texas hill country. Of course it has racism, poverty, ignorance, big oil, as well as great Universities, medical facilities, several diverse big cities, thousands of interesting little towns, Austin, and Willie Nelson!

Many of us hope to live long enough to see this state turn into something to be proud of on more levels, living up to it's possibilities - beyond Bush, Perry, et al. Climate change, I'm afraid, is going to really make it tougher than we thought. Be patient with us, America.
