The state's top GOP hopefuls recently met to discuss the changing political landscape in Texas and how they might keep their iron grip on the state's highest offices. At the heart of their concern is that Texas' traditional non-voting populations are starting to wake up thanks to a resurgent state Democratic Party led by their flagship gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis and the on the ground organizers of Battleground Texas.
Dallas County is ground zero for what the GOP in Texas fears. The state's 2nd most populated county was solid red prior to 2004, and by 2010 Democrats won their first post-Reagan majority on the County Commissioners' Court and they still maintain every county-wide seat on the ballot...

(8,377 posts)it is nice to know that I have a very good chance of seeing Texas become a "mini-California" in my lifetime. The demographics are very strong, but the power is well entrenched. And as the demographics continue to move, the old guard reliable Republicans will fight like crazy. But they are dying, and every year their challenge becomes bigger.
The tipping point is near. And this will be the tipping point for the US. Without Texas, the Republicans have no national power.
The only real question is whether the Southern Republicans will go down in a hail of bullets or will they actually change top be more like the American public at large?

(36,827 posts)It means the GOP has to sink serious resources into a state that was previously uncontested which works to the advantage of Democrats nationwide.
The stakes couldn't be higher. If Democrats show up to the polls in Texas, it means governorship AND the state legislature hangs in the balance. The state legislature is the real jewel. Once that goes blue, gerrymandering gets reversed and the GOP goes the way of the Whigs. Wendy Davis is the key to all of this. This is why Democrats everywhere should be sending money to her campaign. Even $5 can make a huge difference if you get enough people doing it. I don't think Wendy is going to lose, but even a defeat doesn't mean the effort wasn't very worthwhile.

(36,827 posts)I think the groundswell of Democratic support this election is going to be the beginning of the end for the Texas GOP. It's only going to get worse for them from here on out. No longer is Texas going to be the solidly blue state they can rely on for congressional candidates and electoral college votes. At the very least the GOP is going to have to spend significant resources here and since their constituency is located in small towns all over Texas, they are going to have to spend a lot more money to get their votes. Given that they are going to face opposition from groups like yours even in small towns, it's going to make it very difficult for them.
