Ortiz Jr. on Friday announces he will not seek election

CORPUS CHRISTI — Former state representative Solomon Ortiz Jr. announced Friday the he will not seek election after court-ordered Texas redistricting maps left him without a district.

Word came after a San Antonio federal court released Texas House and congressional districts maps this week eliminating one of three seats Nueces County holds in the Texas House.

"Because District 33 has been eliminated, I have chosen not to seek the newly drawn District 34 seat and will support former State Representative Abel Herrero for that office," Ortiz Jr. said in a statement.

The new maps would have pitted Ortiz Jr. and Herrero, both Democrats, in a face off to challenge either Rep. Connie Scott, R-Robstown, or State Rep. Raul Torres, R-Corpus Christi.

Herrero was a good State Rep. before the Tea Party mass stampede in 2010 left him by the wayside. Hopefully the people of this new district will send him to the Lege again.
