Planned Parenthood launches new Texas-based advocacy group and PAC
Planned Parenthood announced Thursday that they have developed an organization to combat recent Texas laws that have cut funding for womens health and increased abortion restrictions.
The national organizations Texas affiliates will work together to create the Planned Parenthood Texas Votes Action Fund.
Just as women trust Planned Parenthood health centers when it comes to their medical care, they trust Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations when we speak out about the policies and politicians that determine their access to their health care, said Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards.
In 2012, the Legislature chose to forgo more than $30 million annually in federal matching funds to exclude Planned Parenthood from receiving funding to provide screenings, annual exams and contraception because it operates separate clinics that provide abortions. The state now foots the bill of $36 million a year for the Texas Womens Health Program to offer the same benefits.
