Perry praises responders, says tornado devastation could’ve been worse

LANCASTER - Standing in front of a house that was still nesting two overturned cars Thursday, Gov. Rick Perry praised early warnings and first responders throughout North Texas, saying the devastation from Tuesday’s round of tornadoes could have been much worse.

Perry also said he will likely ask for federal assistance after local officials have been able to fully assess the damage. A request for federal aid will not “be spending any time on a desk in Austin,” he said.

Perry said he wanted to “hold up” local first responders and emergency management teams after nobody was killed in as many as a dozen tornadoes that destroyed hundreds of structures and injured many across North Texas.

“Today a lot of people are blessed to be alive,” he said. “We need to thank the Lord, it could’ve been worse.”
