Amarillo businessman elected Texas GOP chairman, pledges minority outreach

AUSTIN –After nearly five years of waiting in the wings, Amarillo businessman Tom Mechler is the new chairman of the Republican Party of Texas. The party’s executive committee on Saturday chose him to fill the remaining 14 months of former chairman Steve Munisteri’s two-year term.

Munisteri, a Houston attorney who was first elected in 2010, stepped down to join the likely presidential campaign of U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, a longtime friend.

“Texas is a majority minority state,” Mechler told the party’s executive committee and party loyalists.

“Minority engagement is absolutely essential,” he said. “If we don’t unify our party we lose.”

In the interview he said, “I firmly believe that the Republican Party is the party of Hispanics, of the African-American community, of the Asian-American community because we are not different.
