Freeman's son Nick Zamora promptly quit the troop after eight years with the organization. He was on the verge of becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable by members.
SAN ANTONIO A San Antonio-area mother and son are calling on the Boy Scouts of America's Alamo Area Council to condemn the national organization's policy barring openly gay and lesbian adults from becoming Scout leaders.
Adella Freeman drafted a Change.org petition after an adult member of Boy Scout Troop 512, based in Schertz, about 25 miles northeast of downtown San Antonio, told her at a Feb. 17 meeting that Freeman and her partner Barbara Wright could not be members because they are lesbians. The member cited concerns from other members in the troop.
"Nick was welcome to stay no matter what, but we could not be registered members," Freeman said in a phone interview Thursday, adding that the petition has garnered more than 125,000 signatures.
Freeman's son Nick Zamora promptly quit the troop after eight years with the organization. He was on the verge of becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable by members.
