Thunderstorms developing over South Plains, produce tornado near Amarillo

Thunderstorms are developing over the South Plains as a severe thunderstorm warning was issued through Thursday.

The warning, which is in effects the north through southeast portion of Lubbock and surrounding area, is expected to end around midnight. It could bring about 2.5 inches of hail, 70 miles per hour winds and a possible tornado, according to the National Weather Service of Lubbock.

A line of storms briefly produced a confirmed tornado in Carson County near Amarillo, according to the National Weather Service. A tornado warning expired shortly after 4:15 p.m.

Just after 4 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a significant weather advisory for storms popping up around Scurry County. Nickel-sized hail and 40 to 55 mph winds were affecting southeastern Scurry County.
