Punishment for Longview teen caught smoking pot? Public sign

A Longview man came up with a unique (and very public) punishment for his teen son after the boy was caught smoking marijuana.

Travis Simmering told News-Journal’s news partner KETK that his 13-year-old son, Christian, was caught smoking the drug. His punishment? To wear a sign in a Longview business parking lot that read, “I’ve been smoking weed. I’m only 13.”

The younger Simmering displayed the sign first in the parking lot of a Longview Wal-Mart before moving to a convenience store near Hawkins Parkway and Judson Road.

“We’ve had a lot of response; we’ve had people pray with us,” Travis Simmering said of the punishment in video shared with us by KETK. “We’ve had people just come up and hug him.”

I am beside myself. We lived next to this family. The father is an alcoholic and is abusive. Christian frequently cussed and yelled at my young girls and his sister bullied and assaulted them. I hate to air dirty laundry but please don't praise a man that is the direct cause of his bad behavior. We are accountable for our children's actions.

Maybe his father needs to hold up a sign outside Wal-Mart?

The next thing is for someone to teach him how to use the apostrophe in contractions. He put the apostrophe in between the "v" and the "e" in I've, then he left the apostrophe out entirely in I'm. Once again, because it's Texas (for the failure to provide a decent education).

What that sign REALLY says is, "I'm going to have my worthless father declared incompetent the first chance I get so I can help myself to his assets."
