Leading lawmaker says Dan Patrick 'holds all the cards' in tax-cut debate

AUSTIN – Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick "holds all the cards" in the tax-cut debate, House Ways and Means Committee Chair Dennis Bonnen said Wednesday, casting himself as having been "man enough" to make the first offer at compromise.

Leading senators have been firm in supporting their plan to offer a break to homeowners from the school property tax, an idea championed by Patrick, who campaigned on property tax relief.

The House instead is backing a sales-tax cut, saying property tax relief will be illusory because the levy is controlled locally.

Both chambers have backed a business-tax cut, although they have taken different approaches.
