Capitol’s historic fence may take months to restore after car crash

The vehicle which crashed through the Texas Capitol fence early Wednesday morning caused significant damage to a section of the historic fence, the driveway, and the Capitol grounds, State Preservation Board officials said.

The full extent of the damage and the cost of the repairs is still being tallied, the board said. The historic fence may take months to restore. In the meantime, protective barricades have been placed at the damaged section.

Marcus Reynosa, 26, is the driver who was arrested after speeding away from officers twice through Austin, crashing through a gate and into a tree on the east side of the Texas Capitol, and fleeing on foot before he was finally caught, the Department of Public Safety said.

Reynosa faces charges of evading police in a vehicle, DWI, and failure to stop and render aid, DPS said. He was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. A woman who was in the vehicle with him was also taken to the hospital and has not been charged.
