South Texas prison bus crash sends 16 to hospital

A prison bus traveling in South Texas Friday morning rolled over and hit a pole, causing all but two of the 18 occupants to be transported to nearby hospitals, according to officials.

According to a Texas Department of Criminal Justice release, the bus, carrying 16 inmates and two correctional officers, crashed just before 7:30 a.m. on Highway 186, just west of Raymondville, which is in the Rio Grande Valley about 230 miles south of San Antonio.

Sixteen people were transported to the hospital with injuries believed to be non-life threatening, officials said. KRGV, a TV station, reported the bus driver was injured in the crash.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash, but preliminary information indicates weather and another crash in the area played a role in the accident, KRGV reported.
