Teachers, state employees who 'feel attacked' visit Capitol to defend union dues system
AUSTIN More than 50 teachers and other state workers spoke in the Senate chamber Monday against a bill that would eliminate their ability to use payroll deduction for union dues.
Teachers, CPS workers and corrections officers showed up at the Capitol to question the need for Senate Bill 13 during a State Affairs committee hearing. The bill affects state workers who use payroll deduction to pay their union dues, unless they are first responders or are making a charitable donation.
Educators fear changing the way dues are processed will increase the risk that teachers won't be covered by unions' legal services and could dampen their bargaining power.
"I am a lifelong conservative Republican, and it is breaking my heart that I feel attacked by the people that I fought to elect," said Suellen Ener, a public school teacher. "Nobody in the education business supports this bill."
