State-level audit reveals ineligible overtime payments to former George West police chief

GEORGE WEST – Interim City Attorney Andrew Valdez and Police Chief Suzanne Martin are researching whether any remedy exists for the city’s taxpayers after city council had to approve an amendment to its agreement to repay $12,973.55 to the Office of the Governor’s Financial Services Division.

The action taken at the council’s Feb. 16 meeting relates to “ineligible expenses” related to overtime hours worked by former Interim George West Police Chief Robert Meakins in conjunction with the city’s participation in Operation Border Star.

During the meeting, former Councilwoman Sandra Amoles presented the findings of her ongoing research into the matter. She said she has spent countless hours filing open records requests to various agencies after she first learned of the potential conflict.

“It took a lot of time and it’s not free because they charge,” Amoles said Monday. “But it was worth it. The citizens have to know what’s going on.”
