U.S. Rep. Beto ORourke, D-El Paso, said at the state Capitol on Saturday that U.S. Rep. Joaquín Castro, D-San Antonio, would make a great U.S. senator. But ORourke said he doesnt plan on deferring to Castro in making his own decision about whether to seek the Democratic nomination to challenge GOP U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018.
Ill say this about Joaquín, I think he is a great person, a very good friend. He would make an outstanding candidate for the Senate and would be a terrific senator from the state of Texas, ORourke said. And I know that hes got a decision that he needs to make. But I want folks to understand that I have nothing but respect for Joaquín and, yet, I cant make any of the decisions I can control based on him or anyone else, so Ive just got to do what I think is best for the state of Texas.
ORourke made the comments in an interview with the American-Statesman in front of the Tejano Monument just before the No Ban/No Wall rally protesting the Trump administrations border and immigration policies. Both ORourke and Castro spoke during the rally.
Two Saturdays ago, Castro told about 300 supporters at the Scoot Inn in East Austin that he would make a decision on whether to run for the Senate in eight weeks.

(22,298 posts)I am very much inclined to vote for someone who is bright, intelligent, articulate, & has actual experience of just what it's like to live on the border. He started his own business & it's now a successful enterprise. He has my support.
However, on our way out of the meeting, the "Old Guard" let it be known that "we can't give our support yet, since we haven't heard all of the candidates," which we all took to mean "We're supporting Castro and expect you to do the same." The same people who threw all of their support to HRC, the DNC, & the State Party, figuring that they can keep running elections the with the same game plan that always loses, because, hey, it might work some time.
