San Antonio-set Madalyn Murray O'Hair movie humorous, horrifying

It’s about time someone made a movie about iconic atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair, a marvelously complicated, memorably outspoken and altogether extraordinary woman for her time, who was murdered in a hotel room in San Antonio in 1995.

“The Most Hated Woman in America,” which stars Oscar-winner Melissa Leo in the title role, premieres Friday on Netflix.

It’s largely set in the Alamo City and Austin, where O’Hair lived and founded American Atheists. However, don’t expect the movie’s version of either place to look and feel like the real San Antonio or Austin.

As is often the case with biopics, this one may be inspired by its subject matter, but that doesn’t mean it always reflects the reality of it.
