Frisco man gets 45 years for killing grandmother over $400K inheritance
A Frisco man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for killing his grandmother in 2014 over a $400,000 inheritance.
Rich Allan Schmelzer, 44, was convicted of the 85-year-old Chicago-area woman's murder in December and sentenced Thursday by Kane County, Ill., Judge Linda Abrahamson.
As co-executor of her estate and a beneficiary of her trust, Schmelzer transferred money from Mildred "Dodie" Darrington's credit cards. He later went into debt because of his lavish lifestyle, which included paying for escort services, prosecutors said.
During the trial, Angela Schmelzer told the jury that before Darrington was killed, she loaned her son money and that he always paid her back, the Chicago Tribune reported.
