The Satanic Temple takes whack at corporal punishment in schools (local coverage)

Note: This is local coverage of a story that received national attention. It also is of personal interest since I grew up 10 miles away from Three Rivers and that school district has a similar policy regarding corporal punishment of students.

THREE RIVERS – It has been a week since those living and working here began noticing a billboard that has created quite a stir.

On the eastern shoulder of North Harborth Street (U.S. 281), on the edge of Kopplin Park, the message “Our religion doesn’t believe in hitting children” screams out in white capital letters on black background. But perhaps the words “Paid for by The Satanic Temple,” are of even more impact to the working- to middle-class community that is home to several church congregations.

“I’m concerned about what kind of image that projects for our town,” said Carolyn Brosig of the Three Rivers Inn and Suites, which sits on the opposite side of the street from the billboard.

Brosig and coworker Donna Horton first noticed the sign Oct. 25.

“It’s not good. I think it’s scary because of who paid for it,” said Brosig, who feared that the advertisement could scare away potential customers.

it's about the thought of loosing customers, says the hotel spokesperson. The bottom line always trumps child welfare.
