Onyeri associates get prison, probation for scheme tied to Judge Kocurek's shooting
Most of the people who pleaded guilty to helping Chimene Onyeri carry out a theft and fraud enterprise that led to his attempted assassination of state District Judge Julie Kocurek three years ago walked out of an Austin federal courtroom Tuesday with relieved looks.
With prosecutors content, U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel handed out probation sentences to many defendants and let others go home with minor sentences.
But the two men who traveled from Houston with Onyeri when he wounded Kocurek in a shooting attack outside of her West Austin home werent so fortunate.
Yeakel sentenced Marcellus Burgin to 25 years in prison and Rasul Scott to 17 1/2 years. The rendering of their punishment came down about a month after Yeakel sentenced Onyeri to life in prison for the November 2015 attack on Kocurek.
