In a foretaste of the political mudslinging that could soon play out in the 21st Congressional District, former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis criticized U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, a freshman Republican from Hays County, for grandstanding and for being tone-deaf to ... real problems.
The people in this district ... know that Washington is broken, and its not listening to them, Davis told the American-Statesman Thursday at Austin Java on Manchaca Road, the first stop on her Listening from the Heart of Texas tour. And when they hear Chip Roy grandstanding, its always about an ideology that has nothing to do with their real-world experiences, and the real problems that they want to see Washington addressing for them.
Roys campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
The former Fort Worth state senator levied the attack her first salvo targeted directly at Roy since she entered the race on Monday at a campaign event focused on the rising cost of prescription drugs and health care. She blasted Roy for temporarily derailing a $19.1 billion disaster aid package in May and for voting against a bill to change a provision in the 2017 Republican tax bill that forced Gold Star families relatives of deceased military personnel to pay higher taxes when collecting survivor benefits.
Roy previously defended blocking the disaster relief package by saying it did nothing to address the clear national emergency and humanitarian crisis we face at our southern border and his vote against the other bill, saying in part, House Democrats stripped bipartisan language from the bill ... that would have allowed spending from parents 529 accounts to pay for apprenticeships, homeschooling, and other educational programs.

I suspect that Republicans from thirty years ago could have shrugged off Wendy Davis without lifting a finger. They still had some idea that supporting disaster relief and constituent relief were good politics.
The current crop doesnt.
