After mass shooting, El Paso Democrats blast Texas Gov. Abbott for 'dangerous' tweet

AUSTIN — El Paso Democrats took to Twitter Friday to collectively blast Greg Abbott for what they called "dangerous" rhetoric about immigrant children, a day after they met with the Republican governor to discuss gun safety legislation in the wake of the August mass shooting.

"Our community is trying to heal from racially driven violence. This hurts. It is dangerous," all six members of El Paso delegation tweeted Friday afternoon, adding the hashtags "ElPasoStrong," "LoveWillWin" and "Unity."

The lawmakers were responding to a tweet Abbott sent Friday at 1:17 a.m., just hours after the governor wrapped up a round table discussion with the delegation members and others he'd called together to respond to the mass shooting. In the late-night tweet, Abbott complained about a decades-old U.S. Supreme Court decision requiring Texas to educate unauthorized immigrant children.

"5 liberals on the Supreme Court ruled that Texas had to provide and fund public education for illegal immigrants. The next decade, in Texas v. U. S., Federal courts rejected our lawsuit that the federal government should pay for that education cost," he wrote.
