Joe Biden and Beto O'Rourke to headline Texas Democrats 'virtual' state convention

AUSTIN — Former Vice President Joe Biden will close out next week's online-only Texas Democratic state convention, joining a list of national party headliners that includes House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and four former 2020 presidential candidates.

The June 6 appearance by Biden, the party's presumptive presidential nominee, sends another signal that Democrats are itching to put Texas in play in November, despite the party's 40-year losing streak in national elections.

"We need a president who will lead with empathy and experience," said state party chairman Gilberto Hinojosa. "Joe Biden is a man of character and compassion who has always fought for the working and middle class."

The Democrats' state convention, which was moved to an online-only platform amid fears of further spreading the contagious and sometimes deadly coronavirus, begins Monday and runs for six days. Among the other featured speakers are 2018 U.S. Senate nominee Beto O'Rourke, who also made a failed bid for president this cycle.
